Antique French

Grape Hotte

Ref. No.: 21105-150
Year: France, circa 1890
Dimensions: 24" x 17" x 23" tall
Price: $850
French winemakers once used this beautiful container to harvest grapes for a grand cru Sauternes.  This late-19th-century grape hotte (or hod) would have had leather straps to allow the vineyard worker to wear it on his back, much like a backpack, so his hands could be free to pick the grape clusters. This handsome piece has been newly painted in the manner of the period. Antique hottes make great log bins, to add an authentic European touch to your fireplace area, or wall decor. Or maybe you make your own wine and want to do things the old-fashioned way.
